It is heartening to see 1F children continue the habit of reading right from week 1. Such love for reading has helped them to gain new knowledge and engage in conversations with their peers about the stories too. Such shared experiences are invaluable to relationship-building. I hope 1F pupils will continue to be avid readers.
The favourite corner of 1F children, where they shared their interesting finds.
It is a joy to read quietly at a cozy corner, enjoying one another's company.
There is always something interesting in the library. This time round, it's all about the human body. 1F pupils were captivated by the displays, especially the paper-plate skeleton! I hope they will find time to browse through the books on display too.
This week, 1F pupils were introduced to a simple instructional strategy called RallyRobin. The children paired up to generate as many animal names as possible together. An online timer was used to add spices to the task. I was amazed by the heightened engagement among the children as they interacted actively with one another and jotting down their responses. Some resorted to drawing when they could not spell a word. Everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute their idea and be heard.
After the buzzing of ideas, we gathered as a class and added the responses to the butcher paper. We were thrilled to fill up many butcher papers with words. I was impressed with some of the animal names brainstormed by 1F children. E.g. moose, porcupine, Proboscic Monkey, etc. I could see that 1F children had enjoyed the RallyRobin strategy. This interactive structure gave them the opportunity to interact with their peers and contribute ideas simultaneously. Everyone participated, not just the high flyers. This is a great tool for authentic assessment of the children's learning. Hope to use more of such structures to engage the children in learning again.
