Program for Active Learning - Visual Art (2)

The lesson started with the reinforcement of the ground rules. Ms Atikah demonstrated to 1F pupils how they could create their Neighbourhood base on the given cardboard. The children were able to grasp the ideas quickly and most started sketching the images immediately. I could sense the children's confidence and engagement in art-making.

The pupils discussed in groups on the choice of colours before painting their sketches. There was a lot of interaction among them as they worked cooperatively on the given task. I hope the group of children who argued with one another several times could learn to respect their peers and listen receptively to others' ideas.
Before the lesson ended, 1F pupils sketched a tree, a flower, grass, a duck, a fish and a cat using oil pastels, in preparation for the next lesson. Some children handled the oil pastels well, using techniques learnt in previous art lessons. Many merely scribbled colours across the paper surface. Perhaps these children were tired. I hope 1F children will value every art-making opportunity.
