For PAL this term, 1F pupils started their Visual Art lesson this week. Our trainer, Ms Atikah, introduced some ground rules before the start of the lesson. I thought this was important as it provided the children clear expectations during the lessons.
The Primary 1 lesson focused on Basic Mixed Media for 3D Art. For Lesson 1, the pupils had to create a puppet form of their friend. I liked Ms Atikah's approach. Her explanation was pegged to the pupils' understanding. Demonstration of the use of lines helped the children to engage in their own art-making confidently. I liked how she explained to the children that light oil pastel colours were used for sketching as mistakes made could be covered up by darker colours later. Awareness of the qualities of materials is important in art-making. The children really enjoyed the sketching activity.
Some samples of 1F pupils' oil pastel sketches of their friends. I love the realistic looks!
Next, 1F children filled up the spaces in the sketches with colours. Most interestingly was the gluing of fabric as clothes for the puppets. 1F children had great fun trying to fit the fabric to their puppet's body. There was a lot of interaction among them as they shared with one another how to cut and glue the fabric. Some pasted 1 whole piece of fabric on the puppet's body while others chose to overlap pieces of fabric cut-outs to fit it. There is no right or wrong way. 1F children were often heard praising their peers about their puppets. I think this feel-good feeling is a great motivator for everyone to be engaged in learning.
